Fort
Severn Facts Fort Severn is a northern community that
has approximately 400 people living there. The most commonly spoken language
is Cree (also called Algonkian). They have a Public School with Kindergarden
to Grade eight. it has fourteen teachers, there isn't a high school but there
is an internet corespondence high school which is being set up for the First Nations
communities in north western ontario. It is called Keewaytinook
Internet High School and is a positive attempt to keep children at home with
their parents for their time in high school. There has been internet connection
in the community for about five years. They received their first connection in
96 or 97. It has the distinction of being the furthest north community in
all of Ontario, and it is found on the shores of the Hudson Bay. Relatively speaking
it is approximately 850 km due north of Thunder Bay. The Tribal Council:
Keewaytinook Okimakanak The Primary
Tribal Organization: Nishnawbe Aski Nation. It
received full reserve status on January 11th 1980. Seven years after they surrendered
their original land in 1973 and relocated to where they are right now. Polar
Bears are a relatively common sight to someone who lives in Fort Severn. |
