Victoria Matthews, mother of Lisa (1984), Lloyd (1982),
The first time Victoria flew up to Sioux Lookout it was a very rushed ride. She flew in the Air Ambulance to get to the Sioux Hospital where she gave birth to Lloyd. She was there for eight days this time. When she flew down to Sioux the second time, they flew her up two weeks in advance. She was up for a total of three weeks that time. While she was there she felt homesick, she didn't like the rooms either because she felt that they weren't private. Both times she was visited by Peggy Sanders who took a picture and gave her a bonnet.
After her second child she started to work part time at the band office. She is now working full time. While working she tried to teach her kids about the traditional ways, things like trapping, hunting and cleaning your kills. Her son still does a considerable amount of hunting, mainly geese.
The thing that makes Fort Severn her community of choice is the wildfood that is everywhere. One of the other most alluring aspects of the region is that it is a big open area, you can go as far as the Manitoba border with just a quad and some gas. There is a very powerful sense of freedom in the community for that reason. She has also been there all of her life so she connects strongly to it as her home.
