Josephine had a total of eight kids but only two of them were born in Sioux Lookout, both times she was there for three weeks to a month. While she was there nurses gave family and baby care instructions and information to those that wanted it.
Josephine was originally from Attawapiskat, which is another First Nation near James Bay, to the Southeast of Fort Severn. She has family there now and she and her family will go to visit them often. She now has a gone who has returned to Attawapiskat and gotten married there.
Her first daughter, Shirley, lives in Fort Severn where she was raised. She was the third child and did a considerable amount of hunting with her siblings. They would hunt caribou, geese and ptarmigans most of the time, but they would also hunt based on opportunity and chance. They would also trap things like beavers, otters, martins and foxes. Josephine and Leroy took great pride in teaching their kids how to survive by the traditional ways. One of the important things that they taught to their kids was how to fish in the winter when all the ice was all frozen. To fish like this, you would have to cut two holes in the ice and connect them with a stick under the water, you would then run a net along the stick and anything swimming into it would be caught. To take out the net all that you would do is pull the net back along the stick through one of the holes. Leroy's comment at this process was "always remember to stick your head under the water to make sure that it's sitting right!" (That's a joke).
The thing that they enjoy about Fort Severn most is that there is a great variety of wildfood, for example there is; moose, caribou, ducks, geese, ptarmigans, rabbits, beaver, muskrat, many fish, trout, pike, ling (maria fish)
Before people also hunted whales, seals and polar bears.
There are different berries like strawberries and blueberries.
Also, the land is dry, not surrounded by muskeg so that travel is easy. The water in most of the streams and tributaries is still clean and fresh so that is a distinct benefit as well.
