Hudson Bay
Aidan's account of Hudson Bay

During my time in Fort Severn I got the opportunity to go to the coast of Hudson Bay in a boat. My traveling companions were Rusty Miles and his cousin Nathan. It was Friday afternoon, my plane was leaving around 4:00 that day. Around 2:00 we decided that there would be enough time to boat down to the coast and back, so we went.

It was a windy day and there were a few waves on the Severn river. As we were launching our boat we saw a little seal out in the water. It hadn't left by the time we got into the water so we went to see it. We were within five or ten feet of it before it dove under the water and swam away. The tide was close to being low, just after it's lowest when we set out. The water was shallow in several places because the silt suspended in the water was building up. While we were riding I could feel the spray blown into my face and I watched the shores of the Severn River, which were slowly eroding.
There was a distinct change in the environment during the trip. Suddenly all of the trees were behind us and all the land in front of us was flat. Fort Severn lies very near the tree line, giving access to both of the ecosystems. This was a very clear sign that we were approaching the
coast. Soon after passing the tree line we reached the coast. The sight of it was stunning, there was such a great expanse of water and flat shore that it took my breath away.
While on the coast we met Rusty's little brother who was hunting geese on his quad. We stood and enjoyed the sight for a little while longer. Eventually someone looked at their watch and informed me that it was about 3:30, a half hour before my plane left! We all piled into the boat and began the ride back.
While we were speeding home with our 15 horsepower engine. We accidentally took a wrong turn somewhere. We found ourselves in very shallow water, Rusty's quick reaction stopped us before we busted the motor but we had to pole our way backwards into deeper waters.
When we got back to the boat launch it was 3:57 and I still didn't have my stuff! Lucky for me, the plane was almost a full hour behind schedule and I reached it with plenty of time. But even if I hadn't, I think that seeing Hudson Bay is a fair price to pay for staying away from home an additional day.
